The logo design took on an umbrella shape representing the protective and caring nature of the organization. The wordmark of lowercase letters were chosen to represent the organization as being relatable and approachable. Colors chosen represent hope and strength.

The JLAP Brand was defined through words selected by their committee at the beginning of the process. Many of those words were used throughout the logo design and branding process as reminders of what JLAP aims to achieve.

Secondary colors were chosen for their meaning, such as purple for hope, orange for courage and confidence, teal for healing and protection, and gray for reliability. 

JLAP wanted to completely change their outreach to reflect their new logo and brand identity. Since the majority of their correspondence must be confidential they omitted the use of a business envelope. However, they conduct several lectures and meetings for which they wanted to offer a cohesive package.

The way the symposium project was introduced was by random selection of names. These names were influential in the design community as well as innovative in today’s world. The names for Avalon were all people who were successful at a young age creating an interesting opportunity to target and reach young people in further symposium development. The infographic depicts the relationships of these people.

Before being able to create a logo for the Avalon symposium, it was necessary to consider the mood. How might the adolescents stand out among their peers? What types of textures and imagery would represent them? The mood board stood a dropping point to organize these concepts and consider the styles and interests of artistic adolescents. Overall, standing out, forming their identity, and making their mark was most important.

The Avalon logo design was among the early stages of the symposium project. Designing for adolescents was a real challenge, particularly because of their interests. Overall, it was important to remember these high schoolers needed to find an outlet to make their mark. Therefore, the logo began to take shape as an ink stain. It incorporated colors that were interesting to that age group and the wordmark took on a stencil look.

Once the Avalon Symposium was thought through and the logo was defined, creating a guideline for the brand was necessary. In this book, the use of the logo is specified along with spacing and distortion rules. This was one of the most interesting portions of the symposium project because the logo I designed began to take shape in a differently than just a simple design.

The Avalon Symposium project had multiple components as it was a semester long project. This was an actual iPad app that functioned in its entirety for attendees to use before and during the actual symposium. Included were ways to check-in, links for attendees to create a personal logo, and agenda and speaker information. The app development process offered an excellent opportunity to see logos in action.

The Symposium Project was also, in part an experience design. Targeting artistic adolescents, these three-dimensional elements included a plaza sculpture complete with a place for attendees to express themselves with sidewalk chalk, graffiti style. Also, the name tag left a place for them to personalize their name in an effort to explore their identity through self-expression.

The research revealed storytelling as a relatable form of self-expression to reach Latino adolescents. These adolescents are already using storytelling in their daily lives. Tapping into their interests is a viable way to help them define personal identity, build confidence and increase self-mastery. 

After field research in the Latino community, it was apparent storytelling was a huge part of their culture and lives. The program framework was developed following a traditional plot line. Each day of the summer program includes addressing another part of their personal story

A portion of the outcomes for Your Life. Your Story. included the logo design and brand identity. The guidelines were developed to help lead the organization through the use of the logo and define tone of voice. 

As a part of the art-based activities developed for the program, each student will receive a handbook. This will help guide them through the week and offers a place to sketch, think, and dream.

The map walks through three very different search paths. The house hunter, the furniture hunter, and the personals ad hunter are all trying to find specific details in the their search.

The IUPUI United Way Campaign profile page offers an opportunity for IUPUI employees to share their passions, track personal donations, track volunteer opportunities, and communicate with friends.

The first phases of the campaign project included extensive research covering the ins and outs of the current campaign. Business Origami was a session conducted with the project manager which helped explain how communication is currently structured.

Interviews were conducted with Herron employees and existing campaign donors to better learn why people give to the United Way. Specifically, what inspires them to give and how to better reach the Herron unit for future donations.
Finally, a literature review analyzed each method of communication the campaign was using and how effective or ineffective it was at reaching IUPUI employees.

The research led to the development of an ideal customer journey. This map outlines the path in which the IUPUI employee will ultimately become a United Way donor.

Research proved Herron employees were passionate about self-expression and impactful efforts. They also wanted a personal experience with the campaign. Beginning with self-expression in the form of badges, office door decals, and window clings, employees will inspire each other to become a part of the campaign and ultimately create a profile on the IUPUI United Way Campaign website.

The first pages employees reach will help them develop a profile by selecting badges, similar to those worn by peers. These badges represent their personal passions and will ultimately direct the content that populates their newsfeed on the site.

In addition to badge selection, employees will also select United Way agencies they are interested in. This information will also populate content on their newsfeed making this a truly personal experience with the campaign.

This project culminated in a presentation and research document outlining the phases of the research and the evidence backing up the solution. Both were presented to the IUPUI United Way campaign, the Chancellor's Chief of Staff, and the United Way of Central Indiana's liaison to the campaign. Currently, the IUPUI Campaign is looking to pilot this site with a new student chapter on campus.

The Framework book is a peak into design research methodology. It explores the three phases of design research with in-context examples from the Paws Pantry project.

Each phase of the design research process has a pocket. Within those pockets are explanations of the individual methods used and how they applied to the Paws Pantry project.

This phase includes the majority of data collection.

Inside each pocket contains the instructions for implementing the method and includes the in-context example from the Paws Pantry project.

The data collected in the analysis phase of the project was externalized making the information easily accessible. Utilizing data collection frameworks is highly recommended for keeping data consistent and relevant.

Relevant data was synthesized to better understand the Paws Pantry Experience. A method called FRAPE helped identify a weakness between the IUPUI student and the pantry user. This weakness was a result of communication efforts indicating the marketing and advertising elements needed attention.
From there, ideation sessions were facilitated including persona generation and messaging strategies.

After determining the best ways to reach IUPUI students potentially in need of the pantry, storyboards were developed. These storyboards were then tested on actual pantry users to determine if the marketing locations and messaging were effective.

The Trader Joe's project was an opportunity to frame personal strengths through a design research project

The identification of a design problem stemmed from research methods including: immersion, observation, and interviews at the Trader Joe's store. It was evident the occasional shopper struggled with product location and identification. Because occasional shoppers lead to regular customers, store navigation became the obvious design problem and opportunity.

Data was filtered and pushed through various criteria as a means to extract the most relevant information. Beginning with positive and negative and exploring the information through mental and physical behaviors helped define the activities, interactions, and users involved.

Based on the data collected and ideation session was implemented. The insight gathered from this session defined the participant's ideal store layout. While this did not specifically apply to Trader Joe's, it did help define the needs for strong wayfinding within the store experience.

The critical relationship between the occasional shopper and the regular customer led to stronger wayfinding alternatives. The evidence from the design research proved the occasional shopper was struggling to shop comfortably and efficiently. Developing an alternative wayfinding and navigation would bridge this relationship.

As a part of the design research process, the research map helped define the design problem leading to a stronger solution.

One of the outstanding factors when reaching the millennial generation was their ability to see the impact they were making with volunteerism and donations. In addition, they were not interested in boring annual reports but rather infographics displaying the information easily and efficiently. Taking it one step further this is an interactive infographic leading the viewer through various sectors and ultimately landing at this huge impact number.

When this project was first approached, an analysis of the IMA structure was conducted. This enabled a better understanding of the operations, the individual sections within operations, and the flows of communication. This research revealed the development of the IMA as the area having the most effect on other sectors of operations.

The development of the IMA was defined as the most significant and impactful area of the IMA's operations. Furthermore, reaching the millennial generation is the future of fundraising. Targeting this specific audience led to a 5-step plan that appealed to the millennials needs as donors.

The final portion of the IMA project was a consulting document. The document outlined the research conducted as evidence that backed the 5-step solution. In addition, each touchpoint within that solution project was included.

While the concept of Trophy Wives in the U.S. Army seems absurd, their sex appeal might bring something to the table the Army could benefit from. Meanwhile, the Trophy Wives could maintain their sex appeal and use it to their advantage. Implementing the U.S. Army branding into a campaign targeting the most unrealistic audience was a great challenge and opportunity to push the parameters of traditional messaging. 

Combining the U.S. Army branding with a campaign to reach trophy wives was a playful opportunity to target different types of women who may potentially become trophy wives. For instance, the cheerleader, the model, the actress, and the beauty queen all become the target audience in this campaign.

This series was used to tell information to the viewer. The visual style was pulled from a jar of Trader Joe's marinated artichokes. Each has a different tidbit of data and pairs imagery using visual rhetoric in some fashion.

Using visual rhetoric in this application, the goals are not to inform but persuade the audience of the aphrodisiac potential of an artichoke.

Pairing type with image, the goal is to take different forms of written content and unify them into one book. Poems, essays, how to instructions, and song lyrics were organized together, each with some artichoke reference.
